Leonard Jacobson“That which you seek, you already are. Just wake up and be that. Then you will be in the truth of life. You will be enlightened. You will be in Oneness and timelessness and so there is no soul, no journey, no separation, no seeking and no finding. Everything dissolves into the moment of NOW. Everything is revealed in Oneness.

The dimension of you that has been seeking enlightenment is the ego and the ego will never arrive at that which it is seeking. There needs to be a relaxation, a letting go. The seeking and striving and trying keeps you goal oriented and away from the doorway of the truth, which is the present moment.

When you are fully awake, there is nothing left of you from the past and nothing of you projecting into the future. Your are utterly here now.

This is the awakened state. It is an exalted state of consciousness.

At the deepest level of this state, separation dissolves and you enter into Oneness. Occasionally, through Grace, the sense of your self as an individual dissolves completely and all that exists is perfect Eternal Presence, Silence, Love and Oneness.

Occasionally, the nothingness at the heart of everything is revealed.”

What Is It Like To Be Truly Present?

“To be present is to awaken into that dimension of your self and that dimension of life which is transcendent of the thinking mind. You are silent and you are fully present with what is actually here now. If you are fully present, there is no moment other than this moment. That is what it means to be awake in the truth of life. You are so fully present that you exist in this moment, and only in this moment. You are awake in the eternal now. At the very deepest level of awakened Presence, the past and future have disappeared and only the present moment is available to you. You cannot function within the world of time, for the simple reason that there is no time. There is no sense of your self outside of this moment.

This does not mean that one who has awakened is always functioning at the deepest level of Presence. It is possible to function at a more superficial level of Presence so that the world of time becomes available. Even when you participate in the world of time, you are still deeply grounded in Presence and the present moment is always recognized as the truth of life.

If you are fundamentally awake in Presence you live without judgment, fear and desire. You live in a state of acceptance. You live as Love in the world. The illusion of separation has dissolved. You live with a strong sense of the Oneness of all things and a continuing awareness of the impersonal or eternal dimension of existence. You see others as equal and enlightened, even if they are unaware of it. This extends to animals and the world of nature. It is impossible for you to intentionally harm another. You are compassionate and you always act with integrity. You cannot be dishonest. There is something inside you which simply will not allow it. When you are fundamentally awake in the truth of life, you are substantially free of ego motivations and reactions.

This is not to imply that one who is awake is somehow perfect. At times, you can react like any one else, and experience fear and uncertainty, or feelings like hurt and anger. The difference is that now, you know that you are caught temporarily in the illusion of separation. You do not believe in the story that is presenting itself to you. You know that the past is somehow projecting itself into the present. You do not identify with the experience or any emotional reactions arising out of the experience. And yet, you take full responsibility for whatever you are experiencing. The experience is owned and accepted, but not acted upon as if it is the truth. In the midst of constant change, you know yourself as the One who never changes.”

Grounded in the moment of now…

“When you awaken, you are no longer for or against anything. You have transcended judgment. Life is accepted fully and so too is death. Joy is accepted fully and so too is pain. You are so deeply grounded in the moment of now, that you no longer get caught in the movements of the mind and its world of thought and emotion.”

Let the silent voice of love be your guide

“Almost all of the decisions and choices we make at the level of mind are motivated at a deep unconscious level by fear and the illusion of separation. Develop the art of looking deeply to see whether the choice you are making is being driven or motivated by fear.”

“If it is, then you are going further into the mind’s world of illusion. You are going further away from the truth of who you are. You are going further away from the place where life is abundant. You are going further into separation. Do not let fear lead you astray. Find that still and silent place within where love abides. Know that the essence of your Being is Love. Let the silent voice of love be your guide.”

At home in the world of Now

To be awake means to be truly present, and every fiber in your body, every cell in your body, can embrace at the very deepest level, the recognition that the present moment is the truth of life, and it is the truth of life that I choose to honor, above all. From this moment forward, I will choose presence, remember presence—not as a practice, but as a gentle remembering. I’m in my mind, I subtly correct it, now I’m here again with what’s here. It’s a deep, deep embrace within you of the intention to be present, of the remembering of presence, and of the commitment to bring consciousness to all the movements of your mind and ego that pull you out of presence. A deep commitment to being in right relationship with every aspect of yourself, in a way that brings you into presence.

You see, awakening is kind of an abstract thing. What does that mean? If I say, “Be present with that which is present,” what is abstract about that? It’s not abstract. It’s simple. Be present with his glass. It’s here. You can either be present with it, or you can stay in your mind, thinking—about what might happen next, tomorrow, or what would happen if you become present with it. You see, you become present with this for no reason other than, this is in this moment and so it’s the truth of life. There’s no hidden agenda. It’s not about me, me, me anymore.

To be present is a transcendence of me, me, me. You’re not being present for you. There’s nothing in it for you. You can’t use it, You can’t take advantage of it, You can’t do anything with it. You’re just in it, you are present. You are choosing to be present with this glass simply and only because this glass is of the truth of life, it is actually here, now. And you choose to honor the truth of life by being present with it. That’s all. That’s your only motivation.

There’s nothing in it for you! Not even enlightenment! When you truly are enlightened you’ll know that enlightenment is not for you. When you’re truly awake, you know it’s not for you. Why? Because you’re not here anymore—in the way you used to be. You’re not here, or identified, in the way that you used to be. . . with that mind that is basically looking, the mind/ego that is basically looking for “What’s in it for me?” That’s the basic position of the ego, and ourselves at the level of ego: “What’s in it for me?” Isn’t that true? “Me, me, me… what’s in it for me?”

Even, I would say 97% of people on a spiritual path, are being motivated by the ego and that statement, “What’s in it for me?” And there’s all sorts of things that the ego imagines is in it for you. Well, you might become a master and sit in this chair and everyone will listen to you and think you’re fantastic. Or, maybe if you’re really awakened, you’ll escape from all the pain that you’ve been trying to escape from. Maybe that’s the ultimate accomplishment, isn’t it? Of enlightenment. Isn’t that even better than being a multi-millionaire? I don’t know, is it? If you’ve got no hope of being a multi-millionaire, enlightenment is a good option. [laughter] You can walk up to Bill Gates and say, “Unconscious. You are unconscious, sir. You are wealthy, but unconscious, whereas I am conscious, I am enlightened. I am enlightened.” [said with East Indian accent] You usually turn – become a little bit Indian when you become enlightened. “Very good, it is very good to be awake, to be enlightened.” [said with accent]

Question: So you make the choice to be present, and then when you forget, you make the choice again.”

Answer: That’s all that’s going on. Pretty simple.

But you have to get past the idea of spiritual practice and future outcome. You’re just remembering the present moment. Ah. Remembering what’s in the present moment. It’s a continual re-tuning in, becoming present again with what’s here. It’s just a continual, gentle thing.

Now if that’s all it was, this would be really easy. You’d only need to come here a couple of times, it would be done. But that’s not all it is. Because we humans are so lost. So hopelessly lost—we have been for a long, long time. The ego is so powerful in the overall scheme of things that it doesn’t allow us to remain present. And there are certain factors which must be attended to if you are to become truly established in presence.

What can happen on the spiritual journey of awakening, is that there can be a shift. At the moment, most people live in the world of mind—that is their home. Basically, we live up here. We’re identified with it, this is where we live, we experience life from here. We have occasional moments in presence, but we come straight back to the world of the mind as our home, right? Is that a fair comment? Thoughts never stop. It’s only a matter of moments, or minutes, or maybe a half an hour, before that mind has you right back there. Like there’s a rubber band attached to you, that pulls you straight back into the world of the mind.

Now if you follow what’s going on here, if you really embrace “the Way” (capital W), so that you are so deeply immersed in remembering presence—being present—it is your first choice. Being present is the first priority in your life. And at the same time, you’re bringing consciousness to the mind/ego when it manipulates and tricks you out of presence; you’re bringing consciousness to who you are at the level of mind/ego; you’re allowing all those repressed emotions to surface into conscious expression; you’re bringing consciousness to the hooks that pull you out of presence; you’re bringing all of that into loving, accepting consciousness. And so something is very subtly happening as this process occurs, as you embrace “the Way” as I’m describing it.

What’s happening is [that] the mind/ego is getting to relax it’s strangle hold on you. It’s beginning to trust, more, the dimension of the present moment. It’s not going to happen all at once, but it happens gradually. And then presence begins to become fuller and fuller in you. And then more healing occurs. More consciousness is occurring as you’re going along this path of deepening into presence. And then something else will be triggered, and you bring that to consciousness for healing and release. And then there’s more room for presence. And so it’s just a continual relaxation of the mind’s hold on you as you arise and awaken and open into presence.

And then one day something happens. You hardly notice it happened, because it’s been so gradual. Your home has shifted. Now your home is the world of the present moment. You live Here, you are established Here. And of course at times you go into the world of the mind, because it’s appropriate to—you live in the world of time, of course you do. But you are no longer identified with that, you’re no longer believing in that—although you are enjoying it, and you are allowed to go into the world of the mind. There’s an elastic band still attached all right, but now it’s pulling you back the other way. You just naturally move back to presence. This is where you live. You have a new home.

And then you can say, “It is accomplished! God, it is accomplished. Presence is established within me. Jacob has become Israel. That’s what ‘Jacob has become Israel’ means. It is accomplished. I am at home.”

Fulfilling Your Destiny

So at the end of the day, where do you think I’m left after all those powerful, profound awakenings? Exactly where you’re left, HERE, NOW. That’s it. And sometimes it’s extraordinary and beautiful and eternal, and a lot of the time it’s ordinary. But you know, I choose the present moment however ordinary it is, rather than to be lost in a world of illusion, however amazing that dream might be or promise to be. That’s the choice, ultimately, we all have to come to: the present moment. IS-ness is waiting eternally for those of us who are ready to make that fundamental choice—for the Truth of life this moment. And to become fundamentally established HERE.

And then you know what happens? We fulfill our destiny and complete our journey, because our destiny and our true purpose in being here is to be so utterly present, as awakened consciousness, that we reflect consciousness to consciousness. IS-ness to IS-ness. ONEness revealing Its Self to Its Self. Because the eternal dilemma of God, or ONEness, is that ONEness, IS-ness, cannot know Its Self.  ONE cannot know Its Self.

So we are that aspect of God, that aspect of IS-ness, that aspect of ONEness, that embarked upon a journey into two-ness, into duality, into separation, so that eventually we would return. And in our return, in that vibration between ONEness and separation, in that subtlest of vibrations, ONEness gets to know Its Self. God gets to know God’s Self through us, in that subtle vibration of ONEness. Can anybody feel what I am saying? Because you can’t know it with the mind. And you can only know it in silence.

And what happened to us, was that because we were given free will, we were able to choose something other than the present moment and the Truth of life—and we did! And for the most part now we can’t find our way back. So what I’m sharing here is a very clear roadmap Home. Two steps:

  • Bring yourself present. Honor the present moment as the Truth of life.
  • And then embark upon that process of bringing consciousness to all the ways you’re pulled out of presence, or all the obstacles to being present:  The ego, who have you become, repressed emotions, losing yourself in others, judgment.

Not complicated. But it’s only when the Truth awakens within you, and then you embark upon that journey of presence and mastery that one day you can declare, “God, It is accomplished! At last, I have come Home. The river has returned to the ocean.  ONEness is redeemed. I AM at Home.”

Who is at Home? “I AM.”

Where are you? Where is Home? “HERE, where else? It’s always been HERE.”

Then where have you been? “I got lost.”

Where did you get lost? “In the mind!”

How did you get lost? “Through thinking.”

That’s not a problem. “Yes, but I believed in my thoughts. And then I became absorbed into that world of the mind, and the world of NOT HERE and it’s been very difficult to find my way back, because, in Truth, who I AM that got lost is pure consciousness. Perfect presence. Silence.”

How does silence find its way out of that noisy, chattering mind? That endless maze of thought, concept, opinion, belief? How does perfect silence and pure consciousness find its way out of that maze? Very simply:  Bring yourself present with something that’s HERE, in the moment. Then you’ll be HERE again. Who is HERE again? I AM.

That’s it.
