In Everything… There I Am

With Self recognition, there is no more mirror, no reflection… only… this.

In everything I think, there I am.
In everything I read, there I am.
In everything I write, there I am.
In everything I see, there I am.
In everything I smell, there I am.
In everything I taste, there I am.
In everything I hear, there I am.
In everything I sense, there I am.
In everything I do, there I am.
In everything here, there I am.

I do not exist apart from this.

Where will you find God?

“The genius of a composer is found in the notes of his music; but analyzing the notes will not reveal his genius. The poet’s greatness is contained in his words; yet the study of his words will not disclose his inspiration. God reveals himself in creation; but scrutinize creation as minutely as you wish, you will not find God, any more than you will find the soul through careful examination of your body.”

~Anthony de Mello

A quiet mind is all you need

“A quiet mind is all you need. All else will happen rightly, once your mind is quiet. As the sun on rising makes the world active, so does self-awareness effect changes in the mind. In the light of calm and steady self-awareness inner energies wake up and work miracles without effort on your part.”

A Hopi Elder Speaks:

“You have been telling the people that this is the Eleventh Hour, now you must go back and tell the people that this is the Hour. And there are things to be considered…

Where are you living?
What are you doing?
What are your relationships?
Are you in right relation?
Where is your water?
Know your garden.
It is time to speak your Truth.
Create your community.
Be good to each other.
And do not look outside yourself for the leader.”

Then he clasped his hands together, smiled, and said, “This could be a good time!”

River “There is a river flowing now very fast. It is so great and swift that there are those who will be afraid. They will try to hold on to the shore. They will feel they are torn apart and will suffer greatly.

“Know the river has its destination. The elders say we must let go of the shore, push off into the middle of the river, keep our eyes open, and our heads above water. And I say, see who is in there with you and celebrate. At this time in history, we are to take nothing personally, least of all ourselves. For the moment that we do, our spiritual growth and journey comes to
a halt.

“The time for the lone wolf is over. Gather yourselves! Banish the word struggle from you attitude and your vocabulary. All that we do now must be done in a sacred manner,
and in celebration.

“We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.”

Closer than…

Closer than...Who you are is closer than your heartbeat, closer than your breath. Who you are is closer than the skin that covers your body, the hairs that erupt from your skin, closer than the eyes from which you look out at and see “a world.” Who you are is closer than the sounds that you hear, closer than the voice in your own head. There is no distance separating you from who you are, there is no space that can be measured between ‘you’ and who you are. Who you are is right here, now. Who you are is never not here, right now.

Throughout it all…

You say you must practice, practice, practice
to learn to silence your mind.

And so you sit, and sit, and sit,
listening to a mind that refuses to be still.

For minutes, you sit.
For hours, you sit.
For days, you sit.
For weeks, you sit.
For months, you sit.
For years, you sit.

And then,
sitting becomes

And so, past all hope of ever silencing your mind,
you surrender to the utter futility
of sitting,
to silence your mind.

Throughout it all, something sat with you,
in silence.

You didn’t notice,
because your attention
was on sitting,
because your attention
was on learning, trying,
to silence your mind.

When you gave up,
something noticed
the surrender,
in silence.

In surrender,
something is finally noticed,
in silence.

Silence is my secret

Everything leaps out in the celebration of mystery,
but only nothing enters the sacred source,
the silent substance.

Only nothing gets touched and becomes sacred,
realizes its own divinity,
realizes what it is
without the aid of a single thought.

Silence is my secret.
Not hidden.
Not hidden.

There is no resistance…

… in a raindrop sliding down the edge of a leaf and falling to the ground.

… in the leaf, blown off a tree in a fierce autumn storm.

… in a boulder in the middle of a river, worn down by eons of raging water.

… in the sky, as clouds form, shapeshift and flow across its great expanse.

… in the clouds themselves, as they form, grow, shrink, dissipate.

… in the waves, the pebbles, the sand
… as the ocean appears to rise and fall upon the land.

… in the darkness that is dispelled by light.

Why then, beloveds, do you not likewise surrender to what is?

Moving forms…

Moving forms...Standing in the shower I notice that the water is falling, moving in a steady splashing stream down across my body, hitting the shower floor, pooling around my feet, sliding down the drain. I see my arms move, feel my head drop under the shower head as I lather and rinse my hair, my skin. The sweet fragrance of the soap lingers in my nostrils, and then slowly dissipates, the molecules moving along the currents of air until the smell is no longer strong. The soft hum of the heater just beyond the shower curtain is heard as sound waves travel along those same currents of air, and then bend the little hairs in my ear to cause nerve impulses to travel along my central nervous system and register in my brain as ‘sound’. Throughout all this witnessing, thoughts seem to arise and dissolve… transient, coming and going, moving, moving, moving… just as everything appears to be moving.

And yet, something still and silent and immovable notices all this movement, no matter what form that movement takes. This… formless something… doesn’t move.

“What is IT?” I ask myself. “IT doesn’t move… and yet can it be seen or heard or found… anywhere? Can IT be sensed?”

The answer, indescribable and incomprehensible to understanding … is … paradoxically… IT. And any attempt to describe IT … is not… IT.
